An IT issue at the airport's air traffic control meant no planes could enter or leave the facility.

Passenger services have recommenced at Edinburgh Airport following a major technical issue at the control tower brought the international hub to a standstill.

All aircraft movements were stopped due to an IT issue that was reported at approximately 08:30.

Several flyers found themselves stranded in planes on the runway during the disruption.

Services Recommence with Residual Impact

Officials announced at 10:40 that operations had restarted, and expressed gratitude to passengers for their "understanding and cooperation".

Nonetheless, ongoing issues are expected to persist for some time. Services bound for key destinations like Amsterdam, Frankfurt, London, and Bristol have been called off, with many others subject to postponements.

A spokesperson had initially projected that 27 departures and 11 arrivals could be impacted.

"Passengers are advised to get in touch with their carrier for the current status on their specific flights," was the consistent advice.

Source of the Issue

The problem was traced to the widespread suspension to an technical fault with its control tower systems vendor.

Travelers continue to be advised to verify the schedule of their trip before departing to the airport as knock-on effects are worked through.
