Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has taken 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a persistent back stress problem that remained unresolved.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in Perth.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and felt positive about his chances of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck it's the first Test. If not, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

There is a track record of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the national team for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and stated that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Extensive planning has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the initial game as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
