The reported death tolls announced by each side could not be independently verified.

Several days of unstable peace that had lasted since the weekend were shattered on Wednesday.

On-the-Ground Accounts and Impact

Videos purportedly of the fighting and its aftereffects have been shared online and on social channels, including images claiming to be of those deceased and grainy shots from low-light cameras purporting to be of check posts demolished. These videos have not been verified.

A informant in Spin Boldak in Afghanistan stated that fighting broke out at around 4 a.m. local time (23:30 GMT on the previous day). Another local in the district, who lives about a short distance away from the border crossing, said that "intense hostilities persisted for almost several hours".

A doctor in one of the hospitals in the region reported that he tallied "7 fatalities and 36 wounded transported to the hospital", including males, women and children.

The circumstances were "strained" and more victims were being transferred to hospital, he said.

Evacuations and International Responses

A local authority figure in Spin Boldak announced that "numerous of families have been forced to flee since last night due to the heavy clashes". He mentioned they were on "maximum readiness" after a several military positions were targeted by aircraft from Pakistan. He added that they had the remains of 2 armed forces members.

In a distinct night-time engagement on the north-western frontier, the Pakistani military said that twenty-five to thirty militant and local insurgent fighters were "suspected" to have been eliminated.

The clashes have prompted appeals for reduced tensions from other countries including China and Russia, as well as a proposal from US President Donald Trump that he could intervene to facilitate peace.

On that day, a UN official, UN special rapporteur on the conditions of civil liberties in Afghanistan, wrote on X that he was "deeply concerned" by accounts of non-combatant deaths and evacuations because of the fighting.

Historical Disputes

Pakistan has for years accused the Taliban authorities of allowing the Pakistan Taliban to function from their land and battle against the Pakistani administration in an effort to impose a strict Islamic-led system of rule.

The Afghan Taliban government has consistently rejected this.
