Tetris Wouldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major honors show draws close, you'll find an outcry to include additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works is not a science; it remains highly personal, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Proposal and Rationale

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Just like movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
