The national and international policies – ranging from the challenge to the democratic process in the past to recent actions and warnings – weaken not only domestic and international jurisprudence. The implications are broader.
They threaten the fundamental meaning of a civilized world.
The ethical foundation of civilized society is to forestall the stronger from attacking and exploiting the weaker. Otherwise, we would be locked in a conflict of all against all where only the fittest wins.
This concept lies at the center of the nation's founding texts. This is also the core of the modern framework of international relations advocated by the US, which stresses collective action, democracy, human rights, and the legal authority.
Yet, it is a fragile construct, often broken by those who would exploit their influence. Maintaining it requires that the powerful have the moral fortitude to abstain from seeking short-term wins, and that society ensure they answer for their actions should they falter.
Unchecked strength does not make right. It makes for turmoil, disruption, and conflict.
Each instance entities that are wealthier and stronger target and use those that are less so, the framework of society frays. If such aggression are left unchecked, the fabric unravels. Without intervention, the world can fall into instability and violence. We have seen this pattern previously.
We now inhabit a international landscape grown vastly more unequal. Authority and resources are more concentrated than in modern history. This creates conditions for the privileged to leverage their position against the weaker because they perceive themselves as untouchable.
The wealth of a small group of tycoons is difficult to fathom. The power of big tech, big oil, and large defense contractors extends over much of the globe. Artificial intelligence is could centralize resources and influence to a greater degree. The offensive capability of the world's largest nations is unprecedented in recorded history.
Enabled by a compliant faction and an accommodating supreme court, the executive office has been turned into the supreme and answerable-to-none entity of the state in recent memory.
Combine these factors and you perceive the threat.
A direct line ties earlier breaches of norms to present-day menaces. Each were founded upon the arrogance of absolute power.
You see parallel dynamics in international affairs: in military conflicts, in expansive ambitions, and in the rampant monopolization by powerful corporate entities.
Yet, strength without restraint does not make right. It produces fragility, upended order, and armed conflict.
Historical evidence demonstrates that laws and norms to check the influential also protect them. Without such constraints, their endless appetite for increased control and resources in time cause their collapse – along with their corporations, nations, or empires. And risk global conflict.
Such lawlessness will cast a long shadow over the nation and the world – and the very idea of a rules-based order – for a long time.
