The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Tropical Getaway on the World Heritage Reef, Reportedly Set to be Sold by US Investment Giant.

A major resort island situated within the Great Barrier Reef has reportedly been sold to a American private equity firm for a sum reportedly valued at A$1.2 billion.

“It is an honor to build on the legacy and commitment that the Oatley family has built in the center of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef,” said a senior representative.

The Reported Sale

The New York-headquartered, the investment firm Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family owners, pending standard approvals from regulators.

The sellers released a statement saying they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the affections of many Australians” and is known as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

Hamilton Island's Size and Amenities

Located roughly 900 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans more than 1,130 hectares spanning two separate islands.

Approximately 30% of the land is developed, including a substantial array of amenities:

  • Five separate hotels
  • More than 20 restaurants and bars
  • 20 retail outlets
  • An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
  • A boat marina and a functioning airport

The resort is described as a major job provider in the Whitsundays, supporting a sizable resident community and staff, as well as a broad network of regional partners, suppliers, and local businesses.

A Look Back at The Island's History

The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known sailor and vintner, originally purchased the resort for $200 million in 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.

The island's major development phase first began in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was characterized by simple iron huts and modest accommodations that housed Australian vacationers from inland areas and from the south.

The Buyer's Other Holdings and Regional Background

The acquiring firm also owns hotels and luxury resorts in multiple nations, including Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The Whitsunday region is the ancestral territory of the Ngaro people. The name comes from Captain James Cook, who navigated the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was the Christian holiday of Whit Sunday.
