The Himalayan nation's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Forged By TV Host and Ex-Rapper Mayor

In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent personalities in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Youth Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the new generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer revolt was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying discontent stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Details of the Fresh Electoral Agreement

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Government Consultations Underway

In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such dialogue since the period of the protests.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that conducting a credible election is a shared duty. The message reiterated the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
