Users Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that people who shed pounds through dieting typically have a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mechanism of the jabs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
