Wonder Man Trailer Reveals Marvel's Most Meta Series Ever

Marvel is aware that viewers could be experiencing some superhero exhaustion, so they've decided to include that very concept into their next superhero series.

Indeed, the debut preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it pledges a self-referential angle on the MCU.

The preview, which debuted on October 10th, also subtly pushed the Wonder Man release date back from its original end of 2025 slot into January 2026.

Why one more superhero movie? Everyone is weary of superhero content. Why go see them in the cinema? Wonder Man resonated with me on a profound level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reimagine the whole genre of storytelling.

The interviewer replies: "Have you given any thought about casting?"

The preview then cuts to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's watching the conversation on his phone, and the trailer concludes.

What We Know Regarding Wonder Man

We already knew that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the MCU. The series stars Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a Hollywood actor who becomes a superhero (the hero Wonder Man).

The supporting cast features Ben Kingsley returning as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (aka Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as Department of Damage Control officer P. Cleary.

The Studio's Self-Referential Comedy Strategy

We have limited information about the storyline of Wonder Man, but it's clear that Marvel intends to laugh at its own tropes.

In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the studio is all in on meta-humor. Will this approach succeed without the star power of Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman? Only time will tell.
